A 29-year-old man has appeared in court charged in connection with the murder of his mother in Castlebar, Co Mayo, early yesterday.

Seamus Marrinan with an address at Blackfort, Castlebar appeared at a special sitting of Castlebar District Court this evening charged with the murder of 61-year-old Carmel Marrinan at the same address.

Judge Mary Devins remanded him in prison to appear again before the court on July 17th, and ordered that he undergo psychiatric assessment. Aidan Crowley, solicitor for the accused, said that in his opinion the defendant was a suicide risk and required around-the-clock monitoring.

Ms Marrinan (61) was a nurse who cared for the elderly at the HSE-run Sacred Heart Hospital in Castlebar.

It is understood that Ms Marrinan, a mother of seven, was attacked in the early morning hours and sustained a number of stab wounds.
