A man in his 20s has died having entered the river Liffey on Wednesday night.
Dublin Fire Brigade received notification that a man had entered the water at Wellington Quay in Dublin city centre shortly before 11pm.
Four units of Dublin Fire Brigade, the service’s river rescue boat and an ambulance attended the scene. They were assisted by the Garda helicopter, which used a searchlight to help locate the individual.
After about 40 minutes the man was found and returned to shore by the boat crew.
The man was unconscious when found and, despite efforts to resuscitate him, he was pronounced dead on arrival at the Mater hospital.
This was the second such incident which Dublin Fire Brigade dealt with that night. The service had successfully rescued another man who had entered the Liffey at the Ha’penny Bridge about half an hour earlier.
The man was subsequently arrested by gardaí for a public order offence.
