US Secret Service agents with their weapons drawn have detained a man in the grounds of the White House.
The man was seized halfway between the fence surrounding the complex and the north entrance to the president's residence, according to witnesses.
He was handcuffed by the agents and led away. No further details were available.
Mr George W Bush was speaking in North Carolina at the time.
