A 32 year old Newry man appeared in court yesterday charged with conspiring to bomb Canary Wharf in London's Docklands.

The IRA bombing on February 9th signalled the end of its 18 month ceasefire. Two men were killed in the attack, which also caused millions of pounds worth of damage.

Mr Patrick Gerard McKinley, a car mechanic, of Mullaghbawn, Newry, Co Down, was flanked by three police officers during the five minute hearing at Belmarsh Magistrates Court in southeast London. He was remanded in custody for nine days.

Two men, also from Armagh, were released without charge last night. A fourth man was released on police bail yesterday pending further inquiries.

Two other men arrested during Scotland Yard and RUC raids in London and south Armagh on Friday morning were released over the weekend after their alibis had been verified.
