Gardai investigating the death of an elderly man in Athlone on Monday have arrested a local man.
The single male, in his mid-20s, at 12.35 p.m. yesterday under the Non Fatal Offences Against the Person Act. He was being detained last night at Athlone Garda station.
Mr William Fitzmaurice (74), a retired Army sergeant and father of 12, of Magazine Avenue, Athlone, was found dead in his home early on Monday. A post-mortem by the assistant State pathologist, Dr Marie Cassidy, revealed that he had died from a head injury.
