It has been reported that a suspect in the investigation into the Madrid train bombings has been indicted on charges of helping plan the 2001 September 11 attacks in the United States.

Judge Baltasar Garzon said that Amer Azizi, who is Moroccan, helped organise a meeting in north-east Spain in July 2001 that key plotters in the US attacks later that year, including suspect suicide pilot Mohamed Atta, used to finalise details.

Azizi was initially included in an indictment Garzon handed down last September against Osama bin Laden and other 34 other terror suspects. Then, Azizi was charged with belonging to a terrorist organisation.

The new indictment charges him with actually helping to plan the attacks on New York and Washington.
