Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny has offered a personal reward of €1,000 for information about illegal dumping which took place on his family's land last weekend.
The Co Mayo TD said he took the unprecedented step of taking a front page advertisement in a local newspaper because he was so "incensed" at what had happened.
He was contacted by his mother, Ethna, after a trailer-load of rubbish, including old sofas and broken furniture, was discovered in one of her meadows at Knockthomas, near Castlebar where Mr Kenny lives.
Mr Kenny said he contacted Mayo County Council immediately to inform them about the dumping and then decided to take out the advertisement.
He said he wanted to do anything he could to help the local authority to catch and prosecute the culprits.
"It appears the rubbish was dumped around 10.30pm on Sunday by somebody with a tractor and trailer.
"It looks like somebody emptying a flat or house used the field as a dumping ground. We could not even close the gate afterwards."
He then took out a front-page advertisement in yesterday's Connaught Telegraph newspaper offering the reward to anybody with information leading to the conviction of those responsible for the "deliberate and illegal dumping" of household rubbish at lands at Knockthomas.
There is some speculation locally that the material dumped on the Kenny lands may have been intended for a bonfire which is planned for the area to celebrate midsummer night.
