One of Northern Ireland's most senior judges yesterday criticised public figures for calling people on to the streets to protest over Drumcree.

Lord Justice Nicholson said in the High Court in Belfast: "The riots going on all over Northern Ireland appear to be the result of people calling others to come out on the streets and create general disorder.

"The conduct of these people, including those who call them out, is a disgrace to Northern Ireland.

"It makes us look in the eyes of the world like a place where the people are incapable of living a normal life and behaving in a civilised way.

"Those who take part in riots as a result of people calling others to come out on the streets where they attack the police and cause fear to the general public can only expect to be treated severely."

He was dealing with bail applications by two men arrested during rioting in the Donegall Pass area of Belfast last weekend. Mr Jonathan Green (19), from Sunderland Park, Newtownards, Co Down, and Mr David Fisher (19), from Vernon Street, Belfast, were charged with riotous behaviour. Lord Justice Nicholson refused to grant bail.
