The organisers of the Shane Broderick Appeal Fund say they are "well on the way" to reaching their target of £1 million in support of the injured jockey. As messages of support continue to come in for Mr Broderick, the trustees of the fund estimate that up to £400,000 has been raised so far.

The Co Tipperary jockey was paralysed in a fall at Fairyhouse last March and is currently in the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Dun Laoghaire.

One of the appeal fund's trustees, Mr Andrew Coonan, said yesterday the exact amount raised so far was hard to determine, as many contributions had yet to arrive.

These included £100,000 from the Irish Horseracing Authority, approximately £100,000 raised so far in the public appeal and the proceeds from a levy imposed on bookmaker betting and the tote at the Galway Races earlier this month.

The Irish team which won the Aga Khan trophy at the Dublin Horse Show last week also donated their prize money of £10,000 to the appeal fund.
