Man for court following Blarney burglary and stabbing

A man is to appear in court in Cork on Wedneday in connection with a burglary where a man in his 60s was attacked and stabbed in the face at his home near Blarney.

The 30-year-old man, arrested by gardai not far from the scene of the attack, will be brought before Cork District Court and charged in relation to the incident.

It's understood the man - who is from the Knocknaheeny area of Cork city - will be charged with three offences including burglary and assault arising from the incident.

The assault happened when the house owner and his wife discovered an intruder in their house in the Paud’s Cross area about 1km from Blarney village at around 8.45pm on Monday.

The house owner challenged the intruder and managed to force him out of the house but a struggle ensued and the intruder produced a knife and stabbed the man in the face.

The man’s wife managed to raise the alarm and the man was taken to Cork University Hospital where he was treated for a serious but non-life threatening facial injury before being discharged.

Gardai were alerted and began an investigation. They arrested the 30-year-old man and a 24-year-old woman in an estate a short distance away in the Tower area at around 10pm on Monday.

The man was questioned all day Tuesday by gardai at Gurranebraher Garda Station before officers obtained directions from the DPP to charge in relation to the incident.

Meanwhile the woman was released from garda custody at Mayfield Garda Station shortly before 6pm on Tuesday and gardai will now prepare a file on her involvement for the DPP.
