Iran has discovered foot-and-mouth disease in sheep in three centres near the town of Shahroud, some 250 km east of the capital Tehran, state television said today.

"We are controlling the disease. There is nothing to be concerned about," the head of Iran's veterinary organisation told television.

Last week the disease was found in cattle in neighbouring Turkey.
