A Dublin man had an air-pistol pointed at him when he jumped on the bonnet of his car to stop it being stolen, a court heard yesterday when one of the hijackers was jailed for six years. The car owner was forced to slide off the vehicle and watch it being driven away by Christopher Doyle.

Doyle (20), Lansdowne Apartments, Drimnagh, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to the hijacking and stealing another car on September 3rd, 1996. He also admitted being the getaway driver for a robbery at a cafe in Rathfarnham on July 22nd, 1996. When arrested, Doyle showed gardai where he had hidden a sawn-off shotgun. He said he had the gun for his own protection.
