Boxing: Irish amateur lightweight Ross Hickey has secured Ireland's first medal at the European Championships in Liverpool, guaranteeing at least a bronze medal with a fine 6-1 win over Famil Suleymanov of Azerbaijan.
But Belfast bantamweight Ryan Lindberg was narrowly beaten 5-4 at the quarter-final stage by Germany's Denis Makarov.
Hickey's success means that the Irish team has brought home silverware from every international tournament entered this year. The 20-year-old will now meet Vazgen Safaryants of Belarus in Thursday's semi-finals.
Olympian John Joe Joyce, his cousin David Oliver Joyce, Eamon O'Kane and Con Sheehan all contest their quarter-finals tomorrow.
