Aitor Gonzalez of Spain won stage 14 of the Tour de France today as overall race leader Thomas Voeckler and five-times champion Lance Armstrong took a day out of the spotlight.

Gonzalez, who was part of a 10-man escape group that had broken away after 98km, attacked on the approaches to Nimes and comfortably stayed out in front.

Nicolas Jalabert of France was second on the 192.5 km stage with fellow Frenchman Christophe Mengin third.

Voeckler, wearing the yellow jersey for the ninth consecutive day, and Armstrong who was just 22 seconds off the overall lead, were back in the peloton some 13 minutes back.

Ireland's Mark Scanlon was involved in a couple of breaks early in the day but eventually finished with the main peloton in 91st position.
