A German air force Tornado aircraft crashed off the northern coast of The Netherlands today, but the two crew were rescued, the Dutch Defence Ministry said.

"The pair ejected safely before the plane went down near Vlieland, one of the Wadden Islands in the north," a statement said.

A search-and-rescue team picked up one in the sea and the other from a beach.

The Tornado had taken off from the Eggebeck air base in Germany for a training flight.

A German-Dutch commission will investigate the crash, the statement said.
