A two-year-old boy was being treated for hypothermia in a Dublin hospital today after apparently being abandoned by his father in undergrowth close to a busy motorway.

The child was left in the open for more than eight hours before being found by gardaí early this morning.

His father was arrested last night for being a danger to traffic by walking in the middle of the road while in a "confused" state and was later released.

It was only later, when the man returned to his home, that it was realised that the little boy was missing and the alarm was raised.

The toddler was located by a police dog after several hours of searching. He was in a traumatised condition and was today in the care of the authorities.
