A pedestrian who was killed in a road crash over the bank holiday weekend was struck by a car driven by an off-duty garda, it has emerged.

Jack Whelan (23) who was from the Clontarf area of Dublin, died after he was hit by the car on the Clontarf Road at about 6.30am on Sunday.

He was taken to the Mater hospital, but died shortly after.

The Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission confirmed today it was investigating the incident as a vehicle involved in the incident was driven by an off-duty member of the force.
