Four men were arrested and a stolen taxi recovered by gardai in Co Monaghan overnight.

A garda was injured when the taxi broke through a checkpoint in Carrickmacross at 4.20 a.m. He suffered shoulder and leg injuries after being dragged some distance through the town centre by the car.

The Garda checkpoint had been set up in a bid to stop the taxi which had been stolen earlier in Co Meath.

The blue Volkswagen is understood to have stopped at the checkpoint briefly before driving off at speed, dragging the garda in its wake.

The taxi was eventually stopped on the outskirts of the town and four youths were arrested

The injured garda was taken to hospital for treatment. He has now been released.

The four men are being detained at Carrickmacross Garda station.
