A garda was arrested on suspicion of drink driving in Galway last night after a tip-off from a member of the public.

The garda, who is reported to be attached to a regional traffic division, refused to take a breath test. Under traffic laws, refusing to take a test for drink-driving carries a disqualification of three years.

A statement released by the Garda press office stated: "An Garda Síochána can confirm that a member of An Garda Síochána was arrested last night March 29th in the Galway area on suspicion of drink driving. The case is being processed and a file is being prepared for the DPP."

The garda is believed to have been driving an official unmarked Garda car at the time. He was taken to Loughrea Garda Station and was later released.
