Galway City Council last night elected its first Fianna Fáil mayor in eight years when Michael Crowe defeated Colette Connolly of Labour by nine votes to six.

Mr Crowe is the first native of the Bohermore area of the city to be elected mayor.

His election was a result of an agreement between Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael and three former members of the Progressive Democrats on Galway City Council.
