A Pakistani-born temporary consultant ophthalmic surgeon in Waterford Regional Hospital has alleged in the High Court that there may have been bias against him in the selection of a permanent consultant at the hospital.
Dr Syed Amjad (42), of Ballinsakilldowns, Co Waterford, a father of three and a naturalised Irish citizen, said the failure to appoint him to the position of consultant meant he would be forced to look for locum work which would take him all over Ireland and Britain.
Dr Amjad has challenged the decision of the Civil Service and Local Appointments Commissioners and the South Eastern Health Board to appoint Dr Stephen Beatty of Manchester as consultant ophthalmic surgeon. Under the Freedom of Information Act, he saw the marking schemement by which candidates were assessed and was astonished at the marks awarded to him, Dr Amjad said. He found it extraordinary, having worked as a consultant for almost 18 months, two other candidates were placed above him who had never worked as consultants. Mr Justice Kelly fixed April 3rd for the hearing.
