Police in Derry have discovered a 60lb explosive device in a car at the centre of a three-day security alert.

The car was abandoned on the Victoria Road, the main southbound road in the city, on Sunday.

British army bomb disposal officers reported seeing a gas canister along with home-made explosives in the car's boot. The area remained sealed off last night.

Meanwhile, a man was being treated at Altnagelvin Hospital in Derry after a shooting in the Shantallow area on Monday night. Police say at least five masked men attempted to get into a house. A person who was inside fired a legally-held shotgun at the intruders and a man in his 20s suffered leg injuries. He was said to be stable. In Belfast, a man in his thirties was shot in a lane-way off Glenside Park in a paramilitary-style punishment attack shortly before 10.30 p.m. last night.
