The Environmental Protection Agency has been given a 42 per cent increase in the Estimates - a gain of almost £4 million - bringing its annual draw-down to £12,426,000.

The increase will be used to improve laboratory and office facilities in Dublin, according to an EPA spokeswoman. Twenty staff are to be hired during the year and additional funding is also being directed towards environmental research.
