An Canadian Air Transat airliner made an emergency landing in Portugal's Azores islands on today, and nine passengers were slightly injured.

The agency said the Airbus 310 flying from Toronto to Lisbon was forced to make the mid-Atlantic landing because of loss of fuel.

An emergency services spokesman said the airliner burst tyres on landing at the Azores' Lajes airport. The aircraft spilled fuel onto the runway, forcing the closure of the airport.

The number of passengers and crew on board was not immediately known.
