Tottenham Hotspur continued their bright start to the Premiership season when a screamer by England striker Jermain Defoe helped them to a 2-0 home win over Middlesbrough.

Defoe also scored in Spurs' 2-0 win at Portsmouth last week and his 49th-minute effort on Saturday was consolidated by a soft Mido goal in the 75th minute.

The result meant the London side have won their first two matches for the first time since 1994.

Charlton Athletic also made it two successive victories as they edged promoted Wigan Athletic 1-0 while European champions Liverpool beat Sunderland by the same score at Anfield.
