Roscommon County Council has granted planning permission for the development of a large organic composting plant at Cloonfad, six miles from Ballyhaunis.

Planning permission with 28 conditions has been given to Organic Kompost Ltd to build the plant on 12 acres. It plans to take in the stomach contents of cattle and sheep - bellygrass from abattoirs and meat factories - and, along with other organic waste, compost it.

Since the developers of Organic Kompost Ltd first mooted their intention to set up the plant, which they say will create eight jobs, there has been opposition. Cloonfad Development Committee chairman Mr Martin Regan said this kind of development was not the kind a small but progressive tourism location needed.
