Angel Cabrera kept hopes of a home win alive in the Argentine Open after firing a third round 69 on the par-70 Jockey Club yesterday.

Cabrera, who has never won on the European PGA tour, shares the lead with Sweden's Carl Pettersson who closed in on the title with a 67.

Cabrera's habit of stumbling in the closing stages of tournaments seemed to reappeared when he dropped two shots in the first six holes but a birdie at the ninth calmed the nerves and two more on the inward nine kept him on course for a long overdue maiden victory.

"Today was very difficult and I had to work a lot," said the 31-year-old former caddie who has four second places and 17 other top 10s in five years on tour.

"I thought I need to keep calm and I played under par and that's the important thing. The course has only got two par fives so you can't attack it."

Sweden’s Pettersson is playing his first season on the tour after turning professional following his victory in the European Amateur Championship.
