Birmingham have confirmed their interest in signing Leeds midfielder Lee Bowyer.
Bowyer is out of contract with Leeds at the end of the season, and he is free to leave the club on a Bosman transfer.
A Birmingham statement said: "Further to intense media speculation concerning an approach for Leeds midfielder, Lee Bowyer, Birmingham City can confirm that the club is interested in signing a player of Bowyer's calibre.
"However . . . the club can confirm that lots of work needs to be done before any deal is finalised".
It is unlikely that Bowyer would be interested in anything more than a short-term move to Birmingham.
The club yesterday signed former French World Cup winner Christophe Dugarry.
