Two paramedics were injured when the emergency services came under attack from a gang of stone-throwing youths in Belfast last night.

One of the ambulance men received serious head injuries when he was hit on the head with a brick.

His colleague had to have glass splinters removed from his eyes after the windows of his ambulance were shattered.

The incident began when police, fire crews and medical emergency staff were called to Ligoneil Road at 11 p.m. after reports that houses in the area were under attack and that people had been injured.

When the emergency services arrived they came under attack from bricks and blast bombs.

A number of residents, including some children, were treated at the scene for injuries.

One person has been arrested in connection with the disturbances.
