Almost 200 Irish are 100 or more

There are now about 200 people 100 years of age or older in the State

There are now about 200 people 100 years of age or older in the State. Almost 200 people aged over 100 received special welfare payments worth €2,540 each from the President, Mrs McAleese, last year.

Figures provided by the Department of Social and Family Affairs show Dublin has the greatest number of centenarians (44), followed by Cork (19), Galway (14), Donegal (13) and Tipperary (11).

Co Monaghan was the only county where there are no records of older people in receipt of welfare payments over 100 years of age.

Department officials say figures for people over 100 years of age have not changed substantially in recent years, despite an overall growth in the number of older people in the population.

The Minister for Social and Family Affairs, Mr Brennan, said figures underlined the importance of health and welfare services for older people.

"The fact that there are almost 200 people who are 100 years old or older is encouraging for all of us and reflects, I feel, the increased emphasis on providing a high standard of care, welfare benefits and supports for those of advanced years.

"Many of those who are 100 or over have now lived through one full century and are witnessing the start of another. Indeed, it is likely that there are a few who have the unique distinction of living in three different centuries, having being born in the late 1800s", the Minister said.

The full list is: Carlow 3; Dublin 44; Kildare 6; Kilkenny 4; Laois 2; Longford 3; Louth 3; Meath 3; Offaly 3; Westmeath 3; Wexford 4; Wicklow 1; Clare 7; Cork 19; Kerry 8; Limerick 10; Tipperary 11; Waterford 4; Galway 14; Leitrim 3; Mayo 7; Roscommon 2; Sligo 2; Cavan 8; Donegal 13; abroad 11.

The Dáil's Ceann Comhairle, Dr Rory O'Hanlon TD, said it was not possible to conclude from the Department's figures that longevity was unusual in the county.

"I had four patients over 90 at one stage," he said. "There are a few constituents creeping up on 100, so it won't be long before the county is back on the map as regards centenarians living here."
