One-third of admissions to psychiatric hospital are for alcohol-related problems, but the inspector says these patients should not be there.If they require severe detoxification they should be in a general hospital because of the possible neurological complications which the detoxification could cause. It is "unsafe" to carry out this procedure in a psychiatric setting, he warns.

If the detoxification is minor it should be supervised by the GP.
