A total of £400,000 in grants is to be allocated to local authorities for public education and awareness initiatives on litter. Announcing the allocation yesterday, the Minister of State for the Environment, Mr Danny Wallace, said he was "concerned that local authorities take all practical steps to raise public awareness of the environmental damage caused by litter pollution".

The money will be used to stimulate anti-litter activities at local level, including school competitions, local clean-ups, information leaflets and antilitter exhibitions.
