A girl who has had a toe amputated is to be paid £140,000 as part of a settlement ordered by the High Court yesterday. Ms Emer O'Connor had alleged negligence against a chiropodist.
Ms O'Connor (17), of Ballyclare, Ferbane, Co Offaly, who sued through her mother, Philomena, had sought damages for personal injury which she alleged was caused by the negligence and breach of duty of Ms Patricia Hickey, a chiropodist, of Ballylin, Ferbane.
The girl said she had visited Ms Hickey four times in April 1993 for treatment for warts.
In her statement of claim, the girl alleged that, on April 13th, 1993, the date of her last visit to the chiropodist, she had to be admitted to Portiuncula hospital in Ballinasloe, Co Galway, where tissue was removed from two of her toes.
In February 1995, she was unable to walk, run or behave normally. Her right third toe had had to be amputated the same month.
