DHAKA - Bangladesh's bitterly contested general election yesterday was marred by both political violence that left at least 10 people dead and by poor voter turnout after opposition calls for a boycott.

Most of the deaths occurred in clashes between police and opposition activists, who had vowed to disrupt the election, a government spokesman said.
