Espion scoops ICT award

Irish information security firm Espion has been named company of the year in the Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) Excellence awards.

The overall award, which was announced at a ceremony last night, recognises the company’s ongoing commitment and investment in research, education and knowledge acquisition.

Espion managing director Colmán Morrissey said the award was the most prestigious in the Irish ICT industry, and described it as a phenomenal achievement for the staff at Espion.

He said technology companies could help drive Ireland’s economy and change the country’s international image.

“In today’s business landscape the management of information is one of the most important drivers of improvement and competitive advantage for virtually every company and institution in the globe,” he said. “There is huge potential for Ireland to be a centre of IT excellence.”

Espion expanded overseas last year with the opening of its office in Brussels and an additional UK office.

Also receiving awards last night were IT networking company Agile Networks, which schooped the start-up of the year award, and the team behind Bardahl Racing, the winners of the F1 in Schools Technology Challenge, were named young IT person of the year. The team, from St David’s Secondary School Greystones, Co Wicklow, consists of Joseph Moran, Patrick Flaherty, Christopher Lynch and Conor Darcy, and is coordinated by teachers Triona Brosnan and Tom Reynolds.
