Retail CentresThe choice open to shoppers in the Mullingar area is to be considerably enhanced before Christmas when Marks & Spencer and fashion multiple New Look begin trading in the Fairgreen shopping centre.

Penneys and Lifestyle are anchoring the centre which was developed about three years ago by Navan-based Duignan & McCarthy.

Penneys and Lifestyle have been trading successfully since the start and earlier this year the planners modified the planning permission to allow open retail use for the remainder of the units rather than the original permission for bulky goods.

Marks & Spencer is understood to be paying over €269 per sq m (€25 per sq ft) for a store of 2,190sq m (23,573sq ft) which will include food, drapery and general merchandise as well as a café.

The fast expanding New Look chain is paying over €430 per sq m (€40 per sq ft) for a store of 712sq m (7,664sq ft) that will carry a wide range of women's and men's fashions.

Karl Stewart of DTZ Sherry FitzGerald said the decision by the two leading traders to move into the Fairgreen centre would greatly strengthen the retail offer available in Mullingar.

The agency is quoting a rent of over €540 per sq m (over €50 per sq ft) for two remaining shops of 400sq m (4,306sq ft) and 710sq m (7,642sq ft) which have already attracted considerable attention from a number of high profile traders.
