Irish Tax Institute competition for undergrads

The Irish Tax Institute is  offering a prize of €1,500 for the winning entry in its annual ‘Your Take on Tax’ competition. The  competition, aimed at raising awareness of the Irish tax system among new undergraduates,  invites first and second-year third-level students to create a video or to submit a written submission on a number of tax-related topics.

Teams are asked to create a video or write a submission outlining their understanding of the tax system in Ireland. The deadline for submissions is Friday, March 3rd. Three teams will then be selected to deliver a 10-minute presentation to a team of tax experts on March 27th and the winner will be announced on the same day.

The topics are:

1. What are the different types of taxes in Ireland that individuals and companies pay?
2. Tax plays a large part in driving our economy – talk about one area of tax that you have researched that makes a positive social contribution.
3. Nearly all financial transactions will have a tax impact for individuals whether they are setting up a new business, or selling some assets. But there are lots of tax reliefs and exemptions available to help lower the tax cost – talk about one that your team has read about.
4. It's the role of a Chartered Tax Adviser (CTA) to help individuals and companies manage their tax affairs – from your research about what a CTA does from www.careerintax.ie, why do you think you would like to have a career in tax?

The video should be no-longer than 5 minutes long – and according to the Institute, it doesn’t need to be recorded using an expensive video or recording device, so entrants can use their phones or digital cameras to record the footage.  Teams can have up to four members but must have a minimum of two. Written entries must be no more than 2,000 words.

Teams must be comprised of students registered as first or second year undergraduate students on any degree programme in an Irish university or college. Each entry will be judged by tax experts in the Irish Tax Institute.
