Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger admitted his team's disastrous defending had cost them the opportunity to advance to the quarter-finals of the Champions League. He admitted the damage had been done in Munich. He said: "We lost it in Bayern - the way we gave the goals away from home. Tonight we had a good defensive performance."
Wenger believed there was little to choose between the sides. He said: "I feel it was a very balanced game and both teams played well. We can congratulate the team for a fantastic effort. It was very close in the end and we lost to a very good side. We scored at the right moment and got a feeling if you keep a clean sheet now you can score a goal."
Wenger acknowledged his team had not made the progress he had desired in the competition following their exit at the quarter-final stage last season to Chelsea, who are in the draw for the quarter-finals. He said: "I feel we cannot say that (we have progressed). I feel you have seen good young players tonight who have a good future in that competition."
