Digest/CAMOGIE: The Ashbourne Cup remains the University of Limerick for another season following a great final in Ballygunner yesterday, when the defending champions had to give their very best to defeat University College Dublin, 0-12 to 1-4.
A repeat of last year's final, the sides were level at half-time - 1-3 to 0-6 - with the UCD goal coming from Emilie Darmody.
Meanwhile Mary Immaculate College made it an all-Limerick Ashbourne victory when they captured the Shield Cup in fine style, scoring 2-7 to Cork IT's 2-4. Cork star Marian Jago scored two goals, but MIC had to withstand fierce pressure in the closing stages, especially after CIT's Cora Hennessy got her side's second goal.
COLLEGE HURLING: Tipperary's Eoin Kelly was Limerick IT's hero when he scored a goal from a free from the halfway line near the end of the Fitzgibbon Cup quarter-final game against Cork IT at Shannon. The home side emerged from the tie with a 2-12 to 2-10 victory.
The Mullinahone man finished with a tally of 1-9, with all his scores, bar one, coming from frees. Cork IT had trailed at half-time by 1-8 to 1-4.
WOMEN'S FOOTBALL: All-Ireland champions Galway were defeated Mayo in the National Football League in Tuam yesterday. Cora Staunton inspired Mayo as they gained revenge over Galway with a four-point victory in Division One A, 2-7 to 1-6. Mayo led 2-5 to 0-4 at the break after goals by Emma Mullin and Staunton in the opening period.
In Division One B, Meath defeated Louth at Páirc Tailteann, 3-16 to 2-5, while Dublin drew with Roscommon in Portmarnock, 1-9 to 0-12.
On Saturday, 2004 All-Ireland junior champions Kildare caused something of a surprise with a 1-16 to 0-16 win over Kerry.
JUNIOR FOOTBALL: Kerry champions Finuge made light of the fact that they had to play most of the second half with 13 players as they proved too strong for Roscommon's Tulsk - winning 2-9 to 1-5 - in their All-Ireland club championship semi-final at Meelick, Co Clare.
Finuge will play Stewartstown in the final, after the Tyrone champions produced a blinding second-half performance to beat Ratoath of Meath, 1-9 to 0-6, in the other semi-final at Breffni Park.
INTERMEDIATE FOOTBALL: A sensational late goal from midfielder Ciarán Slane earned Pomeroy a place in the All-Ireland final, the Tyrone champions beating Meath's Wolfe Tones 1-7 to 0-7.
In the other semi-final, Cork's Carbery Rangers accounted for Western Gaels of Roscommon by 3-10 to seven points in Ennis.
