Giovanni Trapattoni's first defeat as Republic of Ireland manager has cost the team two places in the latest Fifa World Rankings. Last month's 3-2 reverse at Croke Park has seen Ireland slip to 38th in the standings.

Spain remain at the top thanks to an unbeaten start to their World Cup qualifying campaign. The Euro 2008 champions, who have won all four of their Group Five matches, stay ahead of Germany and Holland, who swap places with reigning world champions Italy in the rankings.

England are up to eighth, Turkey move up three spots to 10th while Brazil, Argentina, Croatia and Russia make up the top 10.

Scotland remain 33rd, Wales are up two to 60th, Northern Ireland have slipped 10 places to 52nd.
