Wayne Henderson's prospects of breaking into Preston's first-team improved today after Carlo Nash joined Wigan on a month's emergency loan.

Although recently demoted and at odds with Preston manager Paul Simpson, Nash was still Henderson's main competition in challenging current number-one Andy Lonergan.

But Henderson, a Republic of Ireland international, is now the sole contender to dethrone the inexperienced Lonergan who has only featured since Nash's demotion last month.

Henderson signed from Brighton a fortnight ago but has yet to play for the first-team. He has, however, replaced Nash on the bench in the last two league games

The 23-year-old was cup-tied for yesterday's FA Cup defeat to Manchester City, allowing Nash take a seat against his former club.

Lonergan has started the last five games but Henderson is confident he can eventually make the jersey his own.

While Nash's departure is only temporary, he is unlikely to play for Preston again after publicly chasing a move to Fulham during last month's transfer window.

That deal collapsed, leaving the player frustrated and at odds with his boss. Simpson said: "The situation which arose shortly before the transfer window closed means that I still don't feel it is right to involve Carlo Nash in anything we are doing.

"It is disappointing that I am having to make this decision but after his public show of a lack of respect for both the club and his team-mates I feel I am left with very little option.

"Going out on loan is the ideal situation for all parties concerned, Wigan need a keeper, it will give Carlo some games which he wasn't likely to get here."

Wigan are in the midst of a goalkeeping crisis with both Chris Kirkland and Mike Pollitt currently injured.

England international Kirkland faces six weeks out following surgery on thumb ligament damage while Pollitt has a thigh strain.
