Swansea City 0 Newcastle United 2:Another brace from Papiss Cisse saw Newcastle climb to fifth in the Premier League as a 2-0 victory at Swansea gave them a fourth win in a row and moved them ahead of Chelsea, to within two points of the Champions League places.
The in-form striker opened the scoring with a low shot in just the fifth minute, before sealing the win in the 69th minute by lofting over Michel Vorm for his ninth goal in just eight games.
Swansea, who suffered a third straight league loss for the first time since 2004, at times enjoyed almost a monopoly on possession but their lack of a genuine cutting edge was cruelly exposed by the Magpies.
Newcastle boss Alan Pardew admitted Cisse was the difference in the match.
"We were flat today," he said on Sky Sports 1. "Some of our flare players looked like they needed some energy. He (Cisse) was our best player today. Of all our flare players he looked like the one most on it.
“We are lucky to have him, he worked for the team, he was the difference between the two teams.”
Pardew claimed the win was a big result in his side’s push for Europe.
“It was a fantastic win for us, a really big win. Our home games now should see us through to fifth or sixth place. This is the first time we’ve won four in a row in the Premier League. We’ve done it in different ways. Today wasn’t a brilliant performance, but we’ve got quality in the right areas.”
Swansea boss Brendan Rodgers felt his side were undone by “two outstanding finishes”.
He said: “I feel for the players today. Newcastle are a team who’ve done very well this year, they are chasing a Champions League spot. But I felt we totally outplayed them today, but what we couldn’t do was put the ball in the net.
“What beat us today was quality, two outstanding finishes.”
