Ireland U20 45 Tonga U20 27: Ireland under-20s secured their first win of the IRB Junior World Championship with a 45-27 victory over Tonga in the Cardiff Arms Park.
After being recalled to the starting line up Queens University wing Chris Cochrane scored two tries, including a an interception that saw him run the length of the field to touch down.
Full-back Niall Morris also scored twice but a lively Tongan side set the early pace.
Outhalf Sione Toke kicked two early penalties as Ireland struggled. Eric Elwood's side got a break when, after a brilliant break from full-back Mateo Malupo, Cochrane ran in a timely interception.
Scrumhalf Ian Porter added a penalty but the Tongans struck back when Malupo got his reward from some excellent line breaks by touching down.
A missed conversion followed from Toke but the outhalf struck two penalties to give Tonga a 17-10 lead at the break .
Two long range penalties from Porter followed and heralded the beginning of a dominant period for Ireland.
Morris' pace took him through the Tongan defence to score his first and Cochrane scored his second after Ireland capitalised on a defensive lapse by the Islanders.
Porter added a penalty and replacement prop Stephen Archer touched down before a consolation try for Tonga through Salesi Sete.
