Geoffrey Chaucer supplemented for German Derby

Beresford stakes winner set to take chance after Ballydoyle pay €65,000 fee

Geoffrey Chaucer's Derby fortunes have been downbeat so far but he will get the chance to put that right on Sunday after being supplemented at a cost of €65,000 into the 145th Deutsches Derby in Hamburg.

Last season’s Beresford Stakes winner was tailed-off last in the Epsom Derby after meeting with interference during the race and missed out on last Saturday’s Irish Derby after being reported coughing on the eve of the race.

Aidan O'Brien has won Group One races around the world but never before in Germany although he did saddle Anton Chekhov to finish third in the 2007 German Derby.

Godolphin have supplemented Pinzolo for the German Derby, a race in which the main home hope is likely to be Sea The Moon, an unbeaten son of Sea The Stars trained by Markus Klug. Wild Chief, fourth to The Grey Gatsby in the French Derby, is another German contender.

The Guinness Galway Hurdle, highlight of day four, will be worth €250,000, keeping it as Ireland’s most valuable jumps race. It was won last year by Missunited, a gallant third in last month’s Ascot Gold Cup, who could defend her Ballybrit title next.
