THE Irish Cesarewitch was nominated for Gan Saru after he had won a mile and a half handicap at Tralee. Meanwhile, this three-year-old, described by his trainer as "lazy, immature and weak but a real good horse", shares topweight with fellow three-year-old Magic Combination in today's Night Guard Alarms Galway Handicap.
Gan Saru defeated the subsequent Leopardstown winner Caudillo in a maiden at Roscommon and then overcame contrasting ground to beat the outsider Back For Good and the well backed Ceirseach in the Tralee handicap. He is probably progressing.
The question is, can he give more than a stone to the older No Dunce who, in a two mile handicap over this course in July, finished a close-up third behind Gan Saru's stable companion Digadust and Miltonfield? Paddy Mullins's charge, who subsequently won a two mile handicap at Wexford, was not particularly lucky in running. Miltonfield did the form no harm when finishing second behind No Dunce's stable companion, Notcomplainingbut, in a competitive handicap at Tralee.
Rose Of Rapture, disqualified after winning a conditions race at Roscommon, is not easy to assess. Magic Combination is very consistent but on the prevailing going I believe Gan Saru is capable of giving the weight to No Dunce, who might just be more effective over a longer trip.
Course and distance winner Cullenstown Lady will have the going to her liking in the Gerald Naughton Handicap Hurdle. She carried a 5lb penalty when fourth behind Father Rector in a two mile and five furlongs hurdle at the Festival meeting here, but is now 10lb better off with her rival for just over eight lengths.
Richard Dunwoody, who renews acquaintance with Cullenstown Lady, rides Abaco for Dermot Weld in the Kenny Development Group Maiden Hurdle, but I just prefer Frances Street, who when runner-up to Star Defector in a flat race over this course, relegated Abaco to third place, three lengths adrift. Whatever the fate of Abaco, Weld can win the Castlegar Maiden with Mubadara.
While Katiysa has not been seen since finishing second behind Class Note at Navan in June, John Oxx's charge looks to have the best credentials for the Derrinstown Apprentice Maiden and, granted a clear round, the luckless Bobsville should win the Connacht Tribune Beginners Chase.
Henry Candy yesterday confirmed Tote Ebor Handicap second Beauchamp Jade a definite runner for Wednesday's Group Three Stones Bitter Park Hill Stakes at Doncaster.
