Galileo's King George rider is still unknown after almost two hours of legal submissions at the Turf Club yesterday resulted in Michael Kinane's appeal against a two-day ban being adjourned until 10 a.m. this morning.
The non-appearance of two jockeys as witnesses, Niall McCullagh and Declan McDonogh, caused the adjournment and resulted in John Murtagh, who did appear at the hearing, still not knowing if he is to replace Kinane on Galileo in tomorrow's big race.
"The case has been adjourned to 10 in the morning. The hearing did not get as far as discussing the actual case. All that were heard were legal submissions," said the Turf Club chief executive, Brian Kavanagh.
Kinane's solicitor Andrew Coonan confirmed that McCullagh had missed the hearing because he was at a wedding.
It was an anti-climactic end to a tense afternoon, which started with Kinane's arrival at Turf Club headquarters just after 3.30 p.m. Just before 4 p.m. Murtagh arrived to give evidence but, crucially, no other riders from the Leopardstown's Silver Flash Stakes turned up. There were various recesses, when a relaxed looking Kinane spoke to Murtagh and others, but at 5.52 p.m. the hearing was adjourned.
The three-man appeals board was chaired by Michael Hickey and also consisted of Cahir O'Sullivan and Frank Hardy. Kinane is appealing a ban he picked up on Sophisticat for "careless riding" in the listed Silver Flash Stakes. That horse eventually finished second in the race.
Galileo remains a hot 4 to 7 favourite to win the King George.
