THE New York Jets yesterday announced that Bill Belichick would be their head coach next season, but that he would be replaced by former New England Patriots' coach Bill Parcells for the 1998 campaign.

ParcelIs, who guided the Patriots to the Super Bowl recently, is prohibited from coaching in thee National Football League next season unless permission is obtained from the Patriots. He will work as a consultant for the Jets.

Belichick, a former head coach of the Cleveland Browns, served as assistant head coach to ParcelIs last season.
