10.55am: Women’s 5,000m

A brave, but ultimately humbling run in the 10,000m last Friday, where the European cross-country champion was lapped in the closing stages, Fionnuala Britton will be confident of advancing from the 5,000, heats this morning.

There is no margin for error, however, with Britton drawn in Heat 1 where eight of her rivals have clocked faster times this year.

11.50am: Men’s 200m

If he hopes to share the Olympic stage with the world’s fastest man, Paul Hession will need to advance from today’s heats.

Drawn in Heat 4 – 100m champion Usain Bolt runs in the first heat at the Olympic Stadium – Hession has the quality to progress, but the Galway flyer will need to be at his best.

Noon: Sailing

The medal race is now beyond Ger Owens and Scott Flanigan, meaning today’s final two heats in the mens 470 will bring the curtain down on their Olympic campaign. The Dublin sailors have not placed higher than 15th in this regatta and will hope to round off their time in Weymouth with improved results.

Owens and Flanigan are on the water in Race 9 at midday with the final race at 1.15pm.

1.30pm: Triathlon

After Saturday’s photo finish in the women’s event, it’s the men’s turn in Hyde Park this morning where the Limerick-based Fermanagh athlete Gavin Noble is among the 56-strong field.

The 31-year-old from Enniskillen hasn’t had the smoothest of preparations with injuries taking their toll and is unlikely to trouble the frontrunners, where Britain’s Alistair Brownlee will be challenged by Javier Gómez Noya (Spain), Alexander Bryukhankov (Russia) and David Hauss (France).

7.15pm: Women’s 100m hurdles

Derval O’Rourke’s uncanny ability to bring her ‘A’ game to major championships saw her advance from the heats with her fastest time of the year. But a place in the final is too much to ask for, with O’Rourke’s race likely to be run in tonight’s semi-finals.

9pm: Boxing

Michael Conlan can become the third Irish boxer guaranteed a medal when he takes on French flyweight Nordine Ouballi in the ExCel Arena tonight.

Conlan has beaten the Frenchman twice in recent times, once earlier this year in France and last year in the World Championships, and will be favourite to join John Joe Nevin and Katie Taylor in securing at least a bronze.
