Trainer Barry Hills was fined £1,500 under the non-triers rule last night by the Kempton stewards after his charge Sheer Native finished a 12 lengths 11th of 15 in the EBF Rowe and Maw Maiden Stakes.

Officials ruled that the two-year-old, having her third racecourse outing, was tenderly handled by 3lb claimer J D Smith who was found guilty of failing to ride out for the best possible position.

Smith was banned for 14 days (August 14th to 24th inclusive) and the horse also suspended from running in any race for 40 days.

Another apprentice who fell foul of the rules was Paul Doe who received a five-day ban after taking Elbaree past the post first in the Guiness Handicap.

The stewards ruled that the gelding had interfered with fourth placed Free Option which also interfered with runner-up Fredora. Elbaree was disqualified and placed fourth.
