Dream clash at Curragh

The Curragh is set for a clash of Derby winners a fortnight on Sunday

The Curragh is set for a clash of Derby winners a fortnight on Sunday. Luca Cumani has already nominated the Budweiser Irish Derby as the next target for last Saturday's Vodafone Derby scorer High-Rise. Now Pascal Bary has announced that Dream Well, winner of the Prix du Jockey-Club (French Derby) at Chantilly, will join him in the line-up.

"Dream Well has done nicely since his win in the Prix du Jockey-Club and he will run in the Irish Derby assuming everything goes according to plan in the meantime," the trainer said yesterday.

"I have never had a runner in the Irish Derby before, although Brilliance was third for me in last year's Irish Oaks.

"Cash Asmussen, who rode Dream Well at Chantilly, will again have the mount in the Irish Derby."

It will be the first clash of the two Derby winners at the Curragh since Epsom victor Commander In Chief beat French rival Hernando in 1993.

Celtic Swing in 1995 was the last French Derby winner to run in the Irish equivalent, with Henry Cecil's Old Vic in 1989 the last to win both races.

Geoff Wragg yesterday revealed that Vodafone Derby disappointment Gulland is set for a short spell on the sidelines.

He will give the Chester Vase winner time to recover from the effects of dehydration before bringing him back to action at the end of next month.

But veterinary tests have found no serious problems with his colt, who dropped out quickly in the straight at Epsom to finish a well-beaten 11th on Saturday.

The trainer explained: "The only thing that has come to light was that he got very dehydrated. That's the problem and obviously we are treating him for it.

"It wasn't an apparently hot day but there were a lot of them sweating and he got overheated and quite exhausted.

"It is no great deal but he will have a rest and won't run for bit.

"He probably won't run until the end of July and he won't run over a mile and a half again as I don't think he stayed and that was part of the problem on Saturday.
